From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of All Saints,

The world seems to be in turmoil at the moment which can make us all feel unsettled. One of the key understandings that we have taken from our work with Berry Street is the importance of rigorous routines that create predictability and certainty within the school day to help us feel settled and secure. Our brains love routine because they make things easier for us. So in order to promote these routine structures each of the classes start the day in the same manner – a greeting circle and often prayer. Sometimes classes will also have a routine which will mean they read quietly to settle after coming in from play. In the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes often their routine will involve the explicit teaching of phonics early in the day. At home you will know a regular routine for going to bed and doing homework or shared reading is vital to the children’s learning and feeling of safety. Routines help adults as well.

From the Director of Wellbeing

There are many children who find it difficult to manage their emotions, after school or at bedtime. An article I recently read (see link below) describes how tantrums can be a common response children experience when they are trying to deal with everyday things happening around them. Often people think that only toddlers have meltdowns, or have escalated emotions when they are tired, hungry or when something is not done in the way they want it to be. According to Dr Stuart Shanker, there is a reason for children to find it difficult to control their emotions which is called self-regulation.

Child Safety Message

Children and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from people they do not know, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. If they are approached, children should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts.

Children should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school staff member) as soon as possible.

SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the family make a formal report to their closest police station.

The power of YET in 1 Carlier.png

Focus on 1 Carlier

During Health we have been learning about our brain and the differences between a growth and fixed mindset. We have been exploring the different powers we have within ourselves to look at things in a positive way and to use our growth mindset when we are faced with difficulties or challenges. We listened to the poem about the super power of YET and invited our Year 6 buddies to come and help us make our own superhero out of plasticine to remind us to always use our growth mindset and to keep trying even if we can’t do something....... YET!

From the APRIM

Last week saw us celebrating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. The children enjoyed warm pancakes drizzled in syrup or covered in melting margarine. We then flipped pancakes in our annual ‘Pancake Relay’. Mackillop won, followed by Teresa, then Bosco with Assisi coming in at the end. The yard looked great, filled with the children wearing their House colours in exchange for a gold coin. It was a lot of flipping fun.
