From the Acting Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of All Saints,

It is great to be back in the final term of 2020. It is turning out to be one of the busiest with camps, excursions, swimming, assemblies, sports carnivals, end of year events and hopefully a rescheduled Sports Day.

Book Week
This week has been Book Week and the children have enjoyed a number of activities related to this year’s theme of ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’. On Wednesday, the children in Reception to Year 2 had a visit from a travelling theatre company, which they thoroughly enjoyed. On Thursday, the children were able to purchase a book at the Book Swap, with all funds raised going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.  Today we had our Book Week Parade. It was wonderful to see all the various costumes. Thank you to all the parents for helping their children with this. They had a great time showing off what they had come dressed as.

All Saints Day
Next Friday we will come together to celebrate All Saints Day, which is a very important day on our school calendar. It is a day that we celebrate being All Saints and we will commence with a whole school liturgy. During the morning sessions the Year 6 children will carry out their Market Day, which they have been working on over the last term.  In the afternoon the classes will gather together as a school to enjoy some of the talents of the children in a showcase.

The children are invited to wear their house colours to honour the four saints we celebrate at our school. St Mother Teresa (Blue) St Mary MacKillop (Red) St John Bosco (Gold) and St Francis of Assisi (Green). The children are asked to donate a gold coin for the privilege of wearing casual clothes.

Staffing
Planning for 2021 staffing is now underway. One piece of news I would like to share is that Sara Hart will be leaving us at the end of the year. Sara has been appointed to the role of Assistant Principal: Religious Identity and Mission (APRIM) at St John Bosco, Brooklyn Park next year. We would like to thank her for all her hard work in Year 6 and across the school this year.

This term you may have noticed a new face in the Front Office, Mrs Tanya Allen.   Join us in welcoming Tanya to the All Saints Community.

Class Placements
Placement of students for 2021 will occur over the coming weeks. This a complex process and involves careful consideration of many factors. Staff consider academic, social and wellbeing needs of individuals as well as class size and importantly, how the students may work together as a class.

Parents/carers may have specific information regarding their child’s learning, social and wellbeing needs that may help us.  This needs to be provided in writing, emailed to your child’s class teacher or info@allsaints.catholic.edu.au by Friday 30th October. Please remember, information you provide is to assist with our decisions and will be considered along with our knowledge and experience of all the children at All Saints. Requests regarding specific staffing will not be considered. Thank you for your support in this.

All Saints Stars
This week I had the privilege to take the All Saints Stars across to SEM for their drink and a chat. It was great, as I was able to enjoy a strawberry milkshake and take part in all the wonderful conversations going on during these two sessions. I look forward to celebrating with the All Saints Stars next time.

National School Improvement Partnership
You will recall we recently forwarded a National School Improvement Partnership Survey via email to all families, seeking feedback with regards to the All Saints climate.  We ask that you please complete this survey at your earliest convenience, to help us in future planning at All Saints.

Looking forward to a great celebration of our school next Friday.

Best wishes,

Nick Wright
Acting Principal

Focus on Year 5 Holmesby.png

Focus on Year 5 Holmesby

This week 5 Holmesby, along with the other year 5 classes, ventured to Narnu Farm on Hindmarsh Island for our Year 5 Camp. Blessed with perfect weather, we engaged in a number of exciting activities that made the most of the natural terrain and resources on hand, including wilderness survival, kayaking, fish ecology and horseriding to name a few.

"my favourite memory from camp was the kayaking and putting a chicken on my head!" - Kobie

"I really enjoyed the horseriding, it was so much fun and I learnt a lot about horseriding that I didn't know" - Rishika

"My best memory of camp was the kayaking and also horseriding. I really liked doing it,  and want to do it again!" - Coa

"I liked the fish ecology because I caught a hybrid fish and I also caught a carp that was 39cm long" - Tenzin

"My favourite part of camp was the truck ride because we sat down and rested our eyes" - Isaak

For what was many of the children’s first ventures away from home and family, they demonstrated a tremendous amount of maturity and resilience, taking on new challenges, overcoming fears and making so many wonderful memories which they will keep for a lifetime.

Class Assemblies Header.png

Assemblies

Assemblies will be held with only parents of the year level presenting and the buddy classes of that year level attending. While this is disappointing, if we had all children attend we wouldn’t be able to have parents in the hall as well. So we are trying to be as flexible and accommodating as we can be. Please also be aware that these arrangements may be subject to change.

Please see the following dates for your child’s year level below:

Year 2
Week 4 - Friday, 6 November

Year 3
Week 6 - Friday 20 November

Year 6
Week 8 - Friday 4 December

Missing Something Graphics.png

Missing Something?

Over the past two terms there has been an excessive amount of lost property at school that has remained unclaimed and unnamed.

Please can you ensure that all your children's clothing, hats, bags, lunch boxes and drink bottles are clearly named. This enables us to return your child's misplaced items promptly.

Any items that are not named and remain unclaimed at the end of term will be donated to the SEM Op Shop.

From the APRIM

I was fortunate enough to go on the Year 5 camp to Narnu Farm at the beginning of this week. I have been on well over 20 camps during my years as an educator and this one goes up there as one of the best for many reasons.
  • We were blessed with magnificent weather; not a drop of rain, while not being too hot or too cold or windy. Wow!
  • Children faced their fears head on and defeated them. One of my favourite moments was when one of the children who was petrified of the horse riding said, at the end of the camp during sharing time, it was his favourite thing. Wow!
  • The children were truly present and supportive of each other, comforting those who felt a little homesick, encouraging them to try the non-nana made spaghetti and helping them to get the huge sleeping bags back into the tiny bags they came in. They were so beautiful to each other. Wow!
  • They engaged respectfully in Grace, they ate well, they cleaned up after dinner and there was very little food waste. Meal times included laughing and talking around a table. Wow!
So many of the children and parents were worried about camp and it turned out to be a wonderful experience, reminding me of the following scripture from Philippians 4: 6-7

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Thank you to the wonderful staff who attended the camp and spent hours preparing for it. Their efforts really paid off.

God bless.

From the Director of Wellbeing

This week some of our classes have been fortunate to participate in a 5 week program that teaches children to be mindful and improve their emotional regulation. It is structured so that teachers can integrate relaxation and mindfulness into their lesson schedule and will assist students to release negative emotions, create states of happiness, peace and focus. The program complements the Berry Street Education Model, Friendly Schools and our school’s Social and Emotional Learning program, and has strong connections to the Australian Curriculum (Health and Personal & Social Capabilities).

The program covers a different topic each week of gratitude, managing emotions, mindfulness, yoga/optimistic thinking and goal setting. The program is particularly helpful for students to manage their own emotions and build skills, which can improve academic performance. The aim is to empower students to see what is going on in their own mind and body and develop ways and preferences to learn to calm down or optimise their thinking when they need to. The hope is to then see an improvement in wellbeing and as a consequence improved academic performance and peer relationships.

The attached show some tips on how parents can help to nurture their child’s mental health.

Kind regards,

Megan Lovering
Acting Deputy Principal

Book Week 2020

The children have had an exciting Book Week 2020, finishing up today with the Book Week Parade.    The classes have enjoyed various activities throughout the week with their buddies and shared in their love of reading.  We had a visit from Performance Education and took part in the interactive play, "The Great Discovery". Yesterday we held a Book Swap Fundraiser, raising money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.  The children donated a book they no longer wanted and gave a gold coin to swap with a book they wish to read and rehome.

Bring a drink bottle.png

REMINDER

As we head in to the hot weather, we remind you of the importance of staying hydrated.  Please ensure your child brings a drink bottle, filled with water to school each day.  Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, children are unable to drink directly from the drink taps, so will need to have a bottle they can refill with water to keep them hydrated throughout the day.

We thank you for your cooperation.
